Reading Time: 2 minutes

Since the time we’ve gained awareness, we’ve been constantly bombarded with information. Most of this is news and facts about the world. However, a significant portion of this information is comprised of the opinions and views of people. All this forms a cloud of noise in our mind—compelling us to issue judgements and conclusions.

Judgement is the expression of our assumptions that are based on information we gather from the environment. Over time, these assumptions constitute a belief system that forms the bedrock of our identity. Thereafter, we find it hard to look beyond these assumptions; even when situations arise wherein we’d benefit by being mentally flexible. In those situations, we feel outraged by the attack on our prized assumptions. Our ego’s hurt. Consequently, we’re filled with negative thoughts and we exude these sentiments to our environment—upsetting our energy balance with the universe.

To be in a perennial happy state, we must stay connected to the One. This will enable us to banish negative thoughts and feelings and to remain positive. In order to do that, from time to time, we must be open to suspending our assumptions and emptying our mind…like a vessel…of all judgements. How can we do that?

I’ve tried a meditation exercise called Gibberish. To perform this activity, I speak aloud in a language that’s completely alien to me. I persist with this activity for 5–10 min. After that period, my mind feels considerably lighter. Another meditation technique that works well is the silent sitting. For about 4–6 hours, I remain in my room. I don’t communicate with anyone via any mode. Thereafter, my heart feels more open and welcoming to others.

Information is said to be the source of power. But, it can also be a source of agony and negativity. Remove the fungus of judgement from your consciousness and attain a happier, more conscious state of being.

    • Dear Prince: What an insightful question. My answer is as follows:

We’ve been taking in all sorts of information (news, facts, observations etc.) since our childhood. These constitute our physical reality—the world we know, perceive and understand. A portion of this information universe gets confirmed, corroborated in our mind and leads to beliefs/assumptions. Over time, these beliefs get hard-wired in our consciousness—forming the building blocks of our identity. We tend to get so attached to these beliefs that we constantly resist questions…even discussions…on them. Any challenge to our beliefs is construed by us as a personal attack. Over time, we suffer great emotional pain due to our attachment to these beliefs. Let me explain with the help of a hypothetical example.

      1. Information A- The supreme court has mandated that everyone must salute the national anthem
      2. Information B- India, US, UK have stopped the shipments of indigenously manufactured vaccines
      3. Information C- Restaurants specialising in local cuisines are struggling in Indian metros

On the basis of the above information, a person may derive the following beliefs.

Belief A: It’s important for every citizen to demonstrate his patriotism
Belief B: Everyone should prioritise his kith and kin over others
Belief C: We must all strive to support local businesses over those from outside

Over time, the person would tend to corroborate these beliefs by searching for conforming information. This would create an attachment towards these beliefs…until a time comes when they turn into values…beliefs that a person will live by (perhaps even die for)—integral facets of his identity, Here are the values that a person will derive from the above beliefs.

      Value A: Nationalism
      Value B: Tribalism
      Value C: Indigeneousness

These values may seem separate, But they are like swatches of a carpet. Together, they form a composite portrait of a person’s identity. When the individual thinks or acts, these values are the principal driver. This is why I stated that beliefs are inter-connected and ultimately shape the overview of one’s identity.

I hope this clarifies your doubt.
